What counts as a word game

A word game is any puzzle where the answer is made of letters rather than numbers, tiles or reflexes. That covers a lot of ground, and the differences matter more than the label does.

A crossword asks you to interpret a clue. A word search asks you to see a pattern. An anagram asks you to rearrange. A spelling game asks you to build. Those are four different skills, and being good at one says almost nothing about the others, which is why most people have a favourite and find the rest harder than they expect.

Crosswords, and the ones people look up by name

The crossword collection has two halves. One is the syndicated dailies that readers know by the name of their editor or their paper: Thomas Joseph, Stan Newman's Daily Crossword, Sheffer, the Daily Commuter and Premier. They arrive fresh each day and they are the same puzzles that run in print.

The other half is the general grids: easy and hard versions for when you want to choose the resistance, a mini for five minutes, and a cryptic for people who enjoy being lied to by a clue.

If you are new to crosswords, start with the mini and the easy grid. A standard daily assumes a vocabulary of crossword conventions, abbreviations, hidden plurals, clue types that always mean the same thing, and nobody is born knowing them.

Word search, and why it is still the most played puzzle anywhere

A word search demands nothing of your vocabulary. The words are given to you, and the only task is finding them. That sounds trivial and it is precisely why the format has outlasted everything around it.

Anagrams and scrambles

Here the letters are all present and all wrong. Word Scramble is the plain version, Waffle Words puts the anagram into a grid, and Rearrange Letters attaches a clue to it so you can work from either end.

The trick that helps most people is counting before thinking. A five letter answer needs about two vowels, and knowing the length of the target removes most of the wrong avenues before you go down them.

Building words for points

This is the family that includes Outspell, the most played game on the site by a wide margin. It is a spelling duel: you place tiles, the computer answers, and the score comes from the letters rather than from speed. Wordmeister is the closest thing here to a full board game of that kind.

Word Wipe is the opposite temperament. A grid of letters keeps rising, and you clear rows by building words before it reaches the top. Word Candy and Spellbound sit between the two.

If you want the single recommendation, Outspell is the one people come back to, and it rewards knowing short words with awkward letters far more than knowing long ones.

Guessing games

Word Master is the five letter guessing puzzle, the format that took over the internet a few years ago and then settled into a daily habit. Hangman is its ancestor and still works. Cryptogram and Cryptograph hand you an encoded sentence and let you break it letter by letter, which is the most satisfying of the lot when it finally cracks.

Which one should you start with

If you have ten minutes and no particular preference, the honest answer is the most played list, because it is ranked by what people actually finish rather than by what we would like to promote.

If you want something specific:

• Something calm with no clock: word search.
• Something that makes you think without frustrating you: the mini crossword.
• Something competitive: Outspell.
• Something to do every day at the same time: the syndicated crosswords or Word Master.
• Something for a child: Hangman and the picture puzzles.

Playing on a phone

Most of these work on a phone, and the ones that need a larger screen say so on their own page before you start rather than after.

Word searches and guessing games are the best fit for a small screen, because they need one finger and no precision. Full size crosswords are the worst fit, not because they fail but because a fifteen by fifteen grid on a five inch screen means a lot of zooming. The mini crossword exists for exactly that reason.

Why it is free

The games are made by studios that license them for the web, and the site carries advertising rather than charging anyone. That arrangement is the reason there is no sign up wall, no trial and no premium tier.
