Correct Word

Correct Word teaches vocabulary the way vocabulary is actually learned: by attaching a word to an image rather than to a translation.

Each round shows you something and asks you to name it. Animals, food, everyday objects, spread across ten themed sheets. There is no story and no scoring drama, which is unusual for a browser game and exactly right for this one.

If you are learning English, this is closer to a study tool that happens to be pleasant than to a game that happens to teach. If you already speak English, it is a five minute diversion. Both are fine uses of it.

How to play Correct Word

  • An image appears with the word choices below it.
  • Pick the word that names what you are looking at.
  • Correct answers fill in the sheet you are working through.
  • There are ten themed sheets covering different subjects.

Learning by picture

The reason this format works is that it skips the translation step. When you learn a word by pairing it with a word in your own language, recall goes through two hops. When you learn it by pairing it with an image, it goes through one.

That is why the stylised artwork matters more than it looks. A distinctive drawing is easier to attach a word to than a photograph, because there is less detail competing for attention.

Working through the sheets

The sheets are grouped by subject, which means the words in each one are related. That helps and it also traps: within a food sheet, several answers will be plausible for any given picture, so read all the options before choosing.

Tips and strategy

Getting more out of it

  • Say the word out loud when you answer. Vocabulary that is only ever read is vocabulary you will not recognise when someone speaks it.
  • Do not rush a sheet. The value is in the pairing sticking, and that takes a moment of attention per word.
  • Come back to a finished sheet a day later. Spaced repetition is the whole reason this format works, and one repeat the next day is worth more than three repeats in one sitting.

When you get one wrong

  • Look at the picture again before moving on, with the correct word in mind. The correction is where the learning happens.
  • Note which category you are weakest in. If food sheets go badly and animal sheets go well, that tells you where to spend a second pass.

What to avoid

  • Guessing quickly to finish the sheet. Speed is not the point here.
  • Skipping the words you already know instead of using them as anchors for the ones you do not.
