Phrasle Master
Phrasle Master takes the guessing format everyone knows from five letter word puzzles and moves it up a level: instead of placing letters, you are placing whole words.
The puzzles are real quotes, proverbs and sayings, so the answer is never an arbitrary string. That changes the deduction completely. You are not testing letters against a dictionary, you are testing whether a phrase sounds like something a person would actually say.
How to play Phrasle Master
- You are given a phrase to reconstruct, and five attempts to get it right.
- Enter your guess. Each word is then coloured.
- Green means that word is in the phrase and in the correct position.
- Yellow means the word appears in the phrase but somewhere else.
- Grey means the word is not part of the phrase at all.
Puzzles start at three words and grow as you progress, up to proverbs and quotes of a dozen words. Four languages are included, so the same mechanic doubles as vocabulary practice in a language you are learning.
Tips and strategy
- Spend your first guess on structure rather than meaning. The small words, THE, A, OF, TO, IS, appear in most proverbs and pin down positions cheaply.
- Yellow is the prize. A misplaced word tells you two things at once: the word belongs, and it does not go where you put it.
- Count the slots before you guess. A twelve word proverb is a different problem from a five word saying, and the long ones are usually more predictable because the phrasing is fixed by tradition.
- Say your guess out loud. If it does not sound like something anyone has ever said, it is probably not the puzzle.
- On the longer puzzles, lock the ending first. Proverbs almost always resolve to a fixed final phrase, and working backwards from it is faster than working forwards.
