You are not filling a grid until it is done. Each level sets a score to reach, and how you reach it is up to you. A pile of short words gets there slowly, one long word gets there in a single move, and most levels are won by knowing which of those the board in front of you supports.
Tiles upgrade as you progress, which keeps the later levels from being the same exercise at a larger scale.

Targets change the calculation
Because levels are scored rather than completed, the decision on every board is between banking points now and hunting for a bigger word.
Early in a level, hunt. You have room to spend time on a long word and the payoff is large. Late in a level, when you are close to target, bank. A short word that finishes the level is worth more than a long one you do not find.
Tile upgrades
Upgrading tiles raises what the same words are worth, which means progress is not only about finding better words but about improving the board you find them on. It is worth spending on upgrades early, since the benefit compounds across every level after it.
Tips and strategy
Scoring efficiently
- Read the board for endings before you read it for words. An S, ER or ING in view means a longer word is available than the one you are about to take.
- Prefixes extend what you already found. RE, UN and IN are the cheapest way to turn a five into a seven.
- Two short words are almost never worth one long one. The scoring curve is steep enough that patience pays.
Managing a level
- Hunt early, bank late. That single rule wins more levels than any vocabulary.
- If the board will not open, take a short word anyway. Clearing tiles refreshes the letters and often unlocks the rest.
- Watch the target rather than the clock. Knowing how far you have to go tells you which kind of word you need.
Where players lose time
- Taking every three letter word on sight and never reaching the target.
- Hunting for a long word when four points would finish the level.
- Ignoring tile upgrades, which compound across everything that follows.
