A daily crossword is a different animal from a puzzle you can play forever. It arrives once, it has one solution, and tomorrow it is gone and replaced. That constraint is the whole appeal. You are not grinding a score, you are finishing a thing.

Why the newspaper puzzles are different

Most crosswords you find online are generated by software. A word list goes in, a grid comes out, and nobody reads it before you do. The puzzles on this page are not made that way. Each one is built by a constructor, then passed to an editor who checks every clue, cuts the ones that only work if you already know the answer, and decides how hard the whole thing should feel.

That editing is what you are actually paying for when you buy a newspaper, and it shows up in small ways. The fill has fewer strange abbreviations. The long answers are worth the time it takes to get them. A clue that reads two ways reads two ways on purpose.

Picking the right one

They are not interchangeable, and the difference is mostly in how much general knowledge each expects.

Mini Crossword is the shortest thing here. A handful of clues, done in a couple of minutes, useful when you want the feeling without the commitment.

Easy Crossword and Daily Commuter Crossword are built to be finishable. Clues are direct, the answers are common words, and getting stuck is rare. If crosswords have beaten you before, start with one of these.

Sheffer Crossword and Thomas Joseph Crossword are the long running syndicated dailies, both from King Features. Compact grids, clean clues, and the kind of puzzle people have solved with a coffee for decades.

Two of the puzzles here come from the same desk. Stan's Daily Crossword and Easy Crossword are both edited by Stan Newman, who has run the Newsday crossword since 1988. He won the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in 1982 and has spent the decades since deciding what makes a clue fair. How to get better at them

The advice that actually works is boring. Solve the same puzzle every day rather than a different one each time, because you learn the editor before you learn the vocabulary. Fill in every answer you are sure of and leave the rest, since crossing letters do more work than staring does. And when a clue makes no sense, read it as a different part of speech: half of all crossword misdirection is a noun pretending to be a verb.
