Guess Word

Guess Word gives you six attempts to find a hidden word, and after every attempt it tells you exactly how close you were.

What separates it from most puzzles in this format is that the word is not always five letters. Rounds run at four, five and six, and the length changes how you should open. A four letter word gives you fewer crossings to work with and punishes a wasted guess much harder.

How to play Guess Word

Type any real word of the right length and press Enter. The tiles then colour themselves.

  • Green means that letter is in the word and in that exact position.
  • Yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else.
  • Grey means the letter is not in the word at all.

You get six guesses. Every guess has to be a real word, so you cannot simply test letters at random.

There is a hint system if you get stuck. It is worth leaning on early while you are learning the format, and worth ignoring later, because the whole point of the game is the deduction.

It plays with a physical keyboard on a desktop and with the on screen keyboard on a phone.

Tips and strategy

  • Open with a word that spends five different common letters. Something built from A, E, R, S and T tells you far more than a word that repeats a letter.
  • Your second guess is the important one. Do not chase the greens yet. Spend it clearing another five letters you have not tested.
  • Yellow is more useful than green. Green tells you a position is settled. Yellow tells you a letter is in play and rules out a position at the same time.
  • On four letter rounds, tighten up immediately. There is not enough room for two exploratory guesses.
  • Watch for doubled letters. They are the most common reason a solver with four greens still fails, because the mind fills the gap with a new letter rather than a repeat.

If you like the deduction, Phrasle Master applies the same colour system to whole phrases instead of single words.
