Word Bird is a word search with the one feature that decides whether people come back to a word search: choice.
You can take a random grid, or pick from ten categories. That sounds minor and it is the difference between a puzzle you do once and a puzzle you return to, because the vocabulary you are hunting changes with the theme and your eye has to adjust each time.
Words run in every direction, including backwards, which is the whole difficulty of the format. Your eye reads left to right and roughly half of the answers do not.

How to play Word Bird
Scanning deliberately
The instinct is to sweep the grid hoping a word jumps out. That works for two or three answers and then stops.
The method that keeps working is to scan by direction. Go through the whole grid looking only for vertical words, then only for diagonals. Switching direction constantly is what makes a grid feel impossible when it is not.
Anchor letters
Rather than hunting a whole word, hunt its rarest letter. A J, Q, X, Z or K is one distinctive shape, and there will be very few of them on the board. Find the letter, then read outwards in all eight directions.

Getting through a grid faster
- Read the whole word list before you start. Knowing four answers begin with the same letter changes what you notice.
- Take the horizontals first, since they are what your eye finds naturally, then switch to a deliberate vertical pass.
- Double letters are the easiest thing to spot on a board. If a target word has one, start with that pair.
Managing the list
- Cross off as you go. Rescanning for words you have already found is the largest waste of time in any word search.
- Leave the longest words until the grid is half cleared. They cross the most other answers and tend to surface on their own.
- Use the hint on a short word, not a long one. Short words hide better because they blend into the noise.
Common mistakes
- Searching for whole words instead of anchor letters.
- Rereading the region you just solved, because solved words keep pulling the eye back.
