How to play Microsoft Word Twister
Wordament
The rule is adjacency: every letter has to touch the one before it, including diagonally. Scoring rises with length, so a seven letter word is worth far more than two threes made from the same tiles.
The habit that separates good players is scanning clusters rather than hunting for words. Pick four letters that sit together and read them in every order before moving on.
The crossword
Standard rules. Click a square, click again to switch between across and down, type the answer. Fill in only what you are certain of on the first pass and let the crossings do the rest.
Word Twister
Letters to rearrange. Shuffle whenever you stall, because most missed anagrams are missed because the eye locked onto one arrangement.
Tips and strategy
Across all three
- Take the short answers first in every mode. They are cheap and they open the rest.
- Run endings through anything you have found. S, ED, ER and ING work in all three games.
- Shuffle or rescan rather than staring. Fixation is the main enemy in every word format.
Wordament specifically
- Scan the corners first. Corner letters have the fewest neighbours and are the most likely to still be unused at the end.
- Diagonals are where the long words hide, because most players scan only horizontally and vertically.
- Prefixes extend a found word along a path that already works.
Mistakes worth naming
- Playing only the mode you are best at. The three formats train different things and the crossover is real.
- In Wordament, finding a word before finding a path. The path is the constraint.
- Trying to play it on a phone. It is laid out for a larger screen.
