How to play Word Candy
The board sits in portrait, which means it plays the same on a phone as it does on a desktop.
- Tap or click the letters in order to spell a word.
- Submit it. A valid word scores and the letters you used are replaced.
- Undo takes back the last letter if you misclick.
- Words must be three letters or longer.
- The timer runs continuously. Scoring keeps you in the round.
Points scale with length rather than with difficulty. The game does not care whether a word is obscure, only how many letters it has, which is why a plain seven letter word beats a clever four every time.
Tips and strategy
- Read the tray for endings before you read it for words. If you can see an S, an ER or an ING, you are looking at a longer word than you think.
- Take the short word when the clock is nearly out. An unfinished long word scores nothing at all.
- Prefixes are the cheapest way to extend something you have already spotted. RE, UN and IN turn a word you can see into a word worth twice as much.
- Do not stall on a tray you cannot read. Spending a three letter word refreshes those tiles and often unlocks the rest.
- Vowel heavy trays are usually easier than they look. Consonant clusters are what actually kill rounds.
