The Daily Jigsaw gives you one puzzle a day and takes it away again tomorrow. A single picture, a pile of pieces, and no scoring beyond the clock if you care to watch it.

The appeal of a daily is that it is finite. You are not choosing from a library, you are not deciding how difficult to make it, you are simply doing today's, which for a lot of people is exactly the right amount of decision to make before breakfast.

How to play The Daily Jigsaw

  • Drag a piece and drop it near where it belongs.
  • Correct placements snap into position and stay put.
  • Most versions let you choose how many pieces the picture is cut into.
  • Finish the picture to complete the day's puzzle.

Piece count

The number of pieces changes the puzzle more than the picture does. A hundred pieces is a pleasant twenty minutes. Three hundred is an evening. The jump is not linear, because every extra piece is also an extra piece to search through for each placement.

Tips and strategy

Edges first, always

Find every piece with a flat side and build the frame. It is the only part of the puzzle with a rule you can apply mechanically, it bounds the problem, and it gives you two known dimensions to work inside.

Then sort, do not hunt

The slow way to do a jigsaw is to pick up a piece and look for its home. The fast way is to sort the whole pile first.

  • By colour, into rough groups.
  • Within a group, by whether the piece is mostly one shade or contains an edge between two.
  • Set aside anything with unusual shape or a distinctive fragment of the picture. Those go in early and give you anchors.

Working the middle

  • Build outward from areas of high contrast, where a line or an object gives you something to follow.
  • Leave large areas of flat colour, sky and water and shadow, until last.
  • For those areas, stop looking at colour and look at shape. Count the tabs and blanks, and match by silhouette.

Pace

Take breaks. Jigsaw searching relies on pattern recognition, which degrades quickly with fatigue, and five minutes away commonly finds a piece you looked straight at four times.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a new jigsaw every day?

Yes, one picture per day, which is the whole idea of the format.

Can I choose the number of pieces?

Usually yes. The piece count changes the difficulty far more than the image does, and the increase is steeper than it looks.

What is the fastest way to complete a jigsaw?

Build the edge first, then sort the remaining pieces into colour groups before placing anything. Sorting beats hunting by a wide margin.

How do I deal with large plain areas?

Stop matching by colour and match by shape instead. Count the tabs and blanks on each side and compare silhouettes.

Is The Daily Jigsaw free?

Yes, free in the browser with nothing to install.
