Eight Off deals 48 cards face up into eight columns of six and puts the last four in the first four of eight free cells. You build down in the same suit, as in Baker's Game, but with twice the cells there is far more room to dig, and an empty column takes any card or stack.

It is the most forgiving of the three. Our solver won every one of the 4,000 random Eight Off deals it tried, and today's deal, the same for everyone, was won and replayed move by move before it went live. Undo and redo are unlimited, hints show the next move of a winning line, and the calendar keeps every past day.

How to play Eight Off

  • The goal is to move all 52 cards to the four foundations, one per suit, from ace up to king. The foundations stand one above the other on the left.
  • Forty-eight cards start face up in eight columns of six. The last four start in the first four of the eight free cells along the top.
  • In the columns, put a card only on the next card up in the same suit: the 9 of diamonds on the 10 of diamonds.
  • Each free cell holds any one card. With eight of them, you can set aside far more than in FreeCell.
  • An empty column takes any card or any stack in order.
  • A stack in suit moves as one if it is short enough: one card more than your empty free cells, doubled for every empty column you are not moving into.
  • Click a card to send it where it fits best, home first, or drag it. Finish sends the rest home once every column runs down in order.

FreeCell, Baker's Game or Eight Off?

Eight Off builds in suit like Baker's Game but gives you eight cells instead of four, so it is far more forgiving. It is a good bridge between the two others.

The four cards already in cells are the first problem: get them out early, or they cost you half your room for the whole game.

Tips for Eight Off

  • Clear the four cards in the cells first. Play them home or onto their suits as soon as you can.
  • Kings and queens in an empty column start long stacks; low cards there only block it.
  • Keep at least two cells free. Eight cells feel like plenty until a long stack needs to move.

Frequently asked questions

Why are four cards already in the free cells?

That is the deal: 48 cards fill eight columns of six, and the last four go into the first four cells. You start with four free cells, not eight.

Can any card go into an empty column?

Yes, here any card or stack in order can. Some versions of Eight Off allow only kings; this one does not.

Is Eight Off easier than FreeCell?

Usually. It builds in suit, which is harder, but eight cells more than make up for it. Our solver won all 4,000 random deals it tried.
