Mahjong Titans is the version to open when you want to play mahjong rather than configure it.

There is no account, no level select, no tutorial to skip. A layout appears and you start matching. That sounds like a small thing and it is the reason people keep a game like this bookmarked: the gap between deciding to play and playing is about two seconds.

Underneath it is the standard game. Stacked tiles, matched in pairs, cleared in an order that either works or leaves you stuck. Nothing has been reinvented, which is the point.

How to play Mahjong Titans

  • Tiles are laid out in a stacked pattern.
  • Match two tiles showing the same design to remove them.
  • A tile can only be selected when nothing is on top of it and either its left or right side is open.
  • Clear every tile to complete the board.

Free versus visible

The rule people misapply is what makes a tile available. It is not whether you can see it, it is whether anything is stacked on it and whether one side is clear.

A tile in the middle of a row, fully visible, with neighbours on both sides, cannot be taken until one of those neighbours goes.

Why the opening matters most

Mahjong solitaire is decided early. Clearing convenient pairs in the first few moves can bury the tiles you will need twenty moves later, and by the time the board locks, the actual mistake is long behind you and invisible.

That is why the fastest way to get better is to slow down at the start.

Tips and strategy

Opening

  • Read the layout before the first match. The pattern tells you where the traps are.
  • Take from the top layers down. A tile lifted from the top frees several beneath it.
  • Start on the tallest stack early. It is where boards become unwinnable.

Choosing pairs

  • With four identical tiles showing, work out which two to take so the other two stay reachable.
  • Prefer the match that opens new tiles over the one that is simply available.
  • Long rows are queues with two entrances. Clear from whichever end unlocks more.

The usual errors

  • Matching on sight without asking what it opens.
  • Clearing all the easy edges and leaving a dense centre.
  • Confusing a visible tile with an available one.

More layouts are on the mahjong page, and the three dimensional version is Mahjong Dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

When is a tile free in Mahjong Titans?

When nothing is stacked on top of it and either its left or its right side is open. Being visible is not enough.

Is there a timer?

No. The layout can be studied for as long as you want, which makes it a planning puzzle rather than a speed one.

Can a board become unsolvable?

Yes. Clearing the wrong pairs early buries tiles you still need, and the board locks long after the mistake was made.

Do I need an account?

No. It opens straight into a layout with nothing to set up.

Is it free?

Yes. Nothing to download and no payment.
