Skydom Reforged

Skydom Reforged comes from the studio behind Match Arena, and it inherits the thing that made that game interesting: it does not assume you want to play the same board a thousand times.

The core is ordinary. Swap two neighbouring pieces, line up three or more, watch them clear and the board fall. What changes is what the board is asking for, and it changes often enough that the middle of the game never settles into the trance most match three games rely on.

That sounds like a small distinction. In practice it decides whether you are still playing in three weeks, because the failure mode of this genre is not difficulty, it is sameness.

How to play Skydom Reforged

A grid of coloured pieces fills the play area.

  • Click or tap a piece, then the one beside it, to swap them.
  • A swap only holds if it makes a line of three or more.
  • Cleared pieces vanish and everything above drops into the gap.
  • New pieces enter from the top, and any lines they form clear as well.
  • Match four or five, or bend the match into an L or a T, and you get a piece that clears far more than three.

The modes

Different rounds set different jobs. Some count score, some count one specific piece, some ask you to clear obstacles from particular squares, some put a limit on time rather than moves.

Reading which one you are in before the first swap is not a nicety. A score round and a collection round reward opposite behaviour, and playing one as though it were the other is how people stall for an hour on a board they could have cleared in twenty moves.

Moves against clock

When the limit is moves, thinking is free. Take as long as you want, because the board does not change while you look.

When the limit is time, the reverse holds. The best move you can see now beats the better one you would find in four seconds, and hesitating is the most expensive habit available.

Tips and strategy

Play the bottom of the board

Every clear pulls the column above it down, and every piece that lands is a chance at another match. A clear at the bottom rearranges the whole column. A clear at the top rearranges nothing.

Given two equal matches, take the lower one every single time. This is the most reliable habit in the entire genre and most players never build it.

Spend a move to make a four

Before taking an ordinary three, check whether shifting one piece first would turn it into a four.

It usually would. It usually costs exactly one move. And the special piece it creates clears an entire line, which is worth several ordinary matches. That trade is almost always correct and almost nobody makes it, because the three is right there and the four requires looking.

Combine the specials

Two special pieces swapped into each other produce the biggest single effect in the game. On the harder rounds this is not a bonus, it is the intended answer.

Which means finishing a round with two unused specials on the board is a round you got through rather than played well. Bank them deliberately, then spend them together.

Reading a collection round

  • Name the piece being counted before you make a move.
  • Find the column where it is densest.
  • Work that column even when better looking matches exist elsewhere.
  • Hold your specials until several of the target are stacked in one region.

Matches that do not involve the target are not progress. They are setup at best.

The arithmetic at the end

With five moves left, compare what the objective still needs against what an ordinary match delivers.

If small matches cannot close the gap, stop taking them. A round lost by two is identical to a round lost by twenty, so the correct play once the arithmetic fails is to hunt for the large clear even though it might not come.

Where the difficulty actually lives

Not in the boards. In the habit of playing every board the same way. The players who get stuck are the ones who found a routine that worked for eighty rounds and kept using it when the objectives changed underneath them.

Cascades are luck you can influence

You cannot see a cascade coming. What you can do is change how often one happens, and the difference between a player who does and one who does not is large.

Two things raise the odds. Clearing low, because more pieces move. And clearing where several pieces of one colour are already stacked above the gap, because they arrive together.

Before a swap, glance at what sits directly above the pieces about to vanish. If it is three of the same colour in a column, that clear is likely to chain. If it is four different colours, it is not. Neither costs you anything to check.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Skydom Reforged different from other match 3 games?

It cycles between game modes with different objectives rather than running one long identical ladder, so the correct way to play changes from round to round.

How do I make a special piece?

Match four or more at once. A straight four clears a row or column, and five or a bent match makes something stronger.

Why should I match near the bottom?

Because everything above a clear falls into the gap and can form new matches by itself. Matches at the top of the board move nothing.

Should I play quickly?

Only when the round is timed. When the limit is moves, the board does not change while you think, so hesitating costs nothing.

What is the strongest move available?

Swapping two special pieces into each other. The later rounds are designed around that combination rather than around ordinary matches.

Is it free?

Yes, free in the browser with no download and no account.
