Winter Mahjong

Winter Mahjong is mahjong solitaire dressed for the season: snow, ice and pale tile art across a set of layouts built for the winter months.

The rules are the standard ones and the seasonal art is the whole difference, which is worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise. What it does change is legibility. Pale tiles on a pale background make the suits harder to separate at a glance, and that is where the extra difficulty comes from.

How to play Winter Mahjong

  • Remove matching tiles two at a time.
  • Only free tiles can be taken: nothing on top, and one side open.
  • Flowers match any flower, seasons match any season.
  • Clear the layout to finish.

Layouts change the game

Mahjong solitaire difficulty is not really about the tiles, it is about the shape they are stacked in. A wide flat layout is forgiving because most tiles have an open side. A tall narrow one is brutal because almost everything is locked by something above it.

Look at the shape before you start and you will know which kind of game you are in.

Tips and strategy

Dig, do not skim

The tiles at the ends of long rows are free now and will be free in ten minutes. The tiles under the top layer are the ones that need your attention, and every pair you take should ideally uncover something.

Suits in pale art

  • Count the circles rather than reading them as a picture.
  • The bamboo suit is the one that catches people out, since several faces differ only in arrangement.
  • The character tiles are the safest to match quickly because they are the most distinct from one another.

Four copies

Most faces exist four times. If two are free and two are buried, taking the free pair may strand the others. Prefer to clear a buried copy against a free one and keep flexibility.

Knowing when it is over

A mahjong layout can reach a position with no legal move. When the tiles left are in single stacks blocking one another, there is nothing to find, and restarting is the correct response rather than a defeat.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about Winter Mahjong?

The rules are standard mahjong solitaire. What changes is the artwork and the set of layouts, which are built around a winter theme.

Which tiles can I remove?

Only free ones, meaning nothing rests on top and at least one of the left or right sides is open.

Why does this feel harder than other mahjong games?

Pale seasonal artwork makes the suits harder to tell apart at speed, and the layout shape matters more than most players expect.

Can I get stuck with no moves?

Yes. When the remaining tiles block one another there is no legal pair left, and the right response is to restart.

Is Winter Mahjong free?

Yes, free in the browser with nothing to download.
